In a nutshell

I am primarily interested in the dynamics of self-organised spatio-temporal activity patterns in systems of excitable elements far from equilibrium, and the functionalities and capacities afforded to such systems by these emergent patterns.

PhD Student

I am from the Netherlands, where I have been trained in music and music technology (e.g. signal processing, composition, system analysis, Fourier analysis, etc.). Following I have done a Research master in behaviour and cognition, focussing on computational modelling of neurons and networks. Alongside, I have always been studying stochastic and dynamical systems, machine learning, and non-equilibrium dynamics, with applications to understanding the dynamics of neurons and neuronal networks.

Given my interest in emergent activity patterns in networks of neurons and the possibilities that these patterns afford to the network, in the sense of dynamically responding to and interacting with their environment, the NEU-CHiP project interweaves perfectly with my academic curiosity. The possibility to work with cultured neurons, and the precise stimulation and recording techniques that will be used offer an unique opportunity to study the emergent dynamics of neuronal circuits.

“As a reader of speculative (science) fiction and (continental) philosophy, I am excited to be part of the development of such a science fiction-sounding and thought provoking piece of technology as is the aim of the NEU-CHiP project.”
